Hello Inliners, Question I have a 1969, 292, with header, mild cam, holley 470 cfm, truck avenger carb,& HEI. In my Toyota Land Cruiser, What is the best timing at, Iam advance like at ( 14 BTC } runs good but I run duel fuel, Gas, or Propane Gas and it gets hot, fairly fast at high rpms. What do you think. thank you

you need to set your timing for the full rpm range.
idle (with no vacum) 8-12
cruise (highway/low load) 40-45
heavy load 32-36

that means you will need to get a dial back timing light.
set initial to: 12
set mech advance to 20 all in by 2000 rpm
set vacum can to 10-12 for highway use.

does any of that make sense?

you can buy a common hei mech advance kit and adjustable vacum can. same as a V8 setup. tom

The Crane adjustable vacuum advance # 99601-1 allows you to adjust the AMOUNT of vacuum advance and the manifold vacuum where the advance "drops" out.

Thanks, I recently changed distributors from old {HEI} which ran great, to a new HEIDIZZY HEI Distributor {E Bay} Now it misses and backfires{ but still runs good but not as good } with the new distributor. The add saids it has a adjustable vacuum advance how do you adjust this? also my tech needle now jumps up and down, use to be very smooth.

there is a allen srew inside of the vac can. right inside where the vacum line hooks up. did the dist come with any small parts? the small parts are what set the vacum timing amount. the allen sets the vacum level it pulls out. tom

I've seen an adjustable Vacuum can that had a toothed eccentric at the linkage end that acted as a stop, to adjust how much vac advance you get (don't recall the brand though).

Tach should not twitch or jump, are you sure you didn't swap a pair of plug wires? (been there, done that, embrassed as all get out when I finally found it)

My buddy had a stock landcruiser that would loose vacuum when he stepped on the brakes. I suggest getting a BIGGER VACUUM CAN. If you have a bigger engine you need a bigger can to hold the Volume of Vacuum needed. Look in a Junkyard and find one or two vacuum canisters. Steady Vacuum is your friend.

You might also talk to a local Radiator Shop and see if he has a Bigger Radiator. Maybe made for a landcruiser with AC and an Automatic Transmission. Even if you dont have AC/Auto Trans... the larger radiator could help remove the heat. Until then... just ride around with the cab heater on full blast and the windows open.
