I am trying to figure out what clutch I need for my 1980 C-10 with a 250 motor and SM465 Granny Low 4 speed. Some are 11 inch and some are 12 inch.
It is 30 degrees outside so I am procrastinating crawling under there since I aint built my fancy garage yet.

The VIN code might be able to tell you, otherwise you'll have to take it apart to find out. Perhaps you could take it to a Chevy dealership shop and they could tell you.

Make sure the parts store has both available, so you're not waiting around for parts once you take it apart...

Wouldn't the 12" clutch take a larger flywheel? Don't those take a different starter?

I'm not sure the exact differences (ie I wouldn't be able to tell you which you had by looking at it, but I'm sure someone here should be able to).

No. The 153 tooth flywheels are 10 1/2". 168 tooth can take up to a 13".

Looking at the Checker and Napa websites, and in my Hollander interchange manual, I'm only seeing a 168 tooth 11" clutch as an option.
The starter for a 168 tooth has staggered bolts.

Okay, wasn't sure about the starter (The Chev V8 I knew, but even then, I've seen a couple goofy ones from the factory).

Learn something every day, I wan't aware you could put that large a clutch on one of te 168 tooth equiped flywheels.

The Truck is out of service right now. I will take the parts with me to the store when I go. I was looking for a reference/manual.
I have looked all over the internet for information on this topic and couldnt find anything.

I do have a rebuild kit lined up for the SM-465 Transmission from novak-adapt.com
