Pop's new (to him) B-Ville car just got here (came up on a barge). I am trying to identify what rear axle it has with no luck as yet on Google, Yahoo, here or anywhere else. The previous owner claims it is a 1969 'Chrysler midsize' rear axle. It came with a spare gear set 3.90 "43-11". There are 8 bolts in roughly a 5 1/8" cicle, they appear to be 3/8" NF LH thread. The ring and pinion both have a logo stamped in them, looks like a badge with a capitol G in it (I tried Google and Yahoo image searches with no luck). The PN on the ring gear reads 2070560 and the PN on the pinion is 3500743. Both claim U.S.A. manufacture and have a suffix of A8, and the ring does have 43 teeth and the pinion has 11.

In paint on the end of the pinion (facing the inside of the diff) are the numbers 2.066 and 269.

I orriginally thought this was (by the description from the previous owner) an 8 1/4. But now I think it might be the 7 something (1/2"?) rear. We are trying to figure out what we have so we can run down sources of parts as we will probably need some.

Any help would be appreciated.


I would have included the lug pattern, axle length etc, but those have been obviously modified (to look at them). I forget how many bolts the cover has (rear loading diff), but I'll see in the morning (if I can get to it, it's not out of the trailer, yet).


Just to be clear this is not a 'drop out' type diff, the gears go in through the back with a tin cover for the hole they pass through.

From doing a 'touchy feely' behind the balast weigh (the big round thing in the foreground with the rusty bolts) it has 2 more bolts holding the cover on that aren't in this pic.


The ring gear I have handy that supposedly fits this axle is 7 3/16" Outside diameter, so I'm thinking 7 1/4" (I measured using a diameter tape marked in 1/64" increments).

Its a Dana rear....might be a 44 or 60!

Dana maybe, 44 no. I have a Dana 44, this thing would be it's midget kid brother.

I would have guessd Dana 30 if it was a Dana, but the link Drew posted shows the 30 as a kinda square cover, and the 35 is ovoid. Darn.

After searching some, the Dana 27 comes close, but the pictures I keep getting show more bolts in the cover than I counted (I could have missed a few I s'pose).

This page claims the 27 has a 7 1/5" diameter ring gear, that's really close to the 7 3/16 I measuered (.200 vs .1875 respectively).

HMM, I'll have to search some more.
