I just fixed the exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe fitting (stuck bolts) and now I can realy hear the bad muffler. What's a cheap muffler that sounds good? (235 single exhaust)
I don't want it loud but would like to hear it deep.

try a magnaflow or flowmaster...u cant really go cheap and good...but i think flowmaster is cheaper than magnaflow...


got my 78 merc with a 250 I6 and i love it.

I would tend to go with the Turbo II Performance as the Cherry Bomb is noted for its outstanding noise.
The Turbo might be a little noisier than the stock but should be bearable compared to the other two.

I agree with GMDad on the TURBO,especially for 25 bucks.Someone is offering glasspacks for 8 bucks(!) on EBay right now, but they will be LOUD.Another to consider is DYNOMAX.They have nice low rumble and aren't too expensive but more than $25.

ill tell you right now, on a stock exhaust setup a glasspack in not that loud and in fact lowers the frequencies that you hear, at least this was my experience on my chevy 250. so it will give you some ruble but not that much.

I have a Flowmaster 40 series Delta flow running on my 292. A single muffler with a 3 inch inlet and dual 2 1/4 inch outlets. Sounds very "un-six cylinder" like, in a deep tone sort of way. With the deep tone and dual pipes in the back, no one believes that I'm running a straight six.

But Turbos are much cheaper than Flowmaster and, from what I remember from a couple of decades ago, sound as low and mean as the Flows.

Ended up going to Autozone and buying the Turbo II Cherry Bomb. I love it. It sounds fine and was only $16. Thanks for the help.

go with something that will boost performance. I have a 194 with a Delta Flow 40 Series and it sounds deep and smooths out at high speeds ( i think Glasspacks are worthless) I was reading a article in Chevy High Performance and they said that L6s produce 50% more exhaust than the V-word motors,so the exhaust system is a vital place for performance. How could that be? Do you mean like more exhust going through a system? Cause if you've got a V8 with dual exhaust you've got 4 cylinders per system. If you've got a 6 cylinder with a single exhust then you've got 6 cylinders per system. That's a 50% difference. I could see this but L6 wouldn't actually produce more exhaust (as in volume and flow) than a V8.

Seems the best way to deal with this would be to increase from 2" pipe to 3.

Yeah 2 to 3 inch would probably eliminate the exhaust issue

Area
2 inch Pipe = 3.141592654
3 inch Pipe = 7.068583471

That would mean you're at more than twice the flow capacity. (225% of original)

If it were a question of maximum flow, then no exhaust manifold at all would produce the highest horsepower; it does not. Bigger is better ain't necessarily so. You need to size the exhaust system to maintain flow, anything larger is cosmetic only and will decrease power.

I always thought that with the stock manifold there wasn't much the could do for performance (flow). Can you still hurt performance going too big? I thought you need headers to take advantage of any real flow.

I should have said "may decrease power". There is just no point in having anything larger than the exhaust manifold outlet because you are likely to cause exhaust reversion. As the exhaust cools on its way through the system, the volume decreases and there is even less need for large pipes behind the muffler(s).

I figure my hp is down to around 100 anyway. This engine is far from new. What was the stock diameter anyway? Mine appears to be stock and it's 2"
One good reason to go with wider exhaust is to change the tone. Wider exhaust helps drop the pitch or at least reinforces the lower harmonics. There is a limit to this as well. The pitch is dependant on rpm. I love the way my Dad's Chevy truck sounds with 3" pipes (350 sbc).

news on my most recend exhaust de-grade...i took of my stock muffler. havent driven it yet but it sounds like it will make a bit of a power difference...it was one of those big round silencer things that goes at the very end of the exhaust system. I am now running 2" straight pipe...i have a modified 1bbl carb and needed to retard my timing and stuff for it to run good, sounded like crap at first before i tuned it up...now its the most amazing thing i've heard yet. It sounds biggggg....at idle it lopes and has a nice deep sound, and when i rev it up i dont get that farty/ricey sound...it actually rumbles as i rev it...beautiful...and when i start it up it growls before it does the lopey thing...wow...i am truly amazed...hope it performs better now too...I'll find out tomorrow

I have the 40 delta flows with a single 2inch in and dual 2 inch outlets. Man, i love that 292 sound. It doesn't sound like a six cylinder i have already like five people thought I had a V8.

thats awesome....I was going to be getting a new exhaust system this year still after i finish modding up my other head and installing that...i can only run the exhaust on one side of my car because of the position of my gas tank...so i was thinking a single outlet header and a single to dual muffler in the back...i love the straight pipe sound as it sounds mean and deep (lots a compliments as well) but the drone of it at about 2300-3000 RPM is pretty loud and i definitely need a muffler. I have heard that a glasspack muffler before the flowmaster or magnaflow or whatever will reduce drone and keep a nice rumble throughout the entire RPM range. I have had a glasspack and hated it cause it was too loud in the car (louder than straight pipe) so i dont think i'll try that.

My truck was so loud so long with a nasty sound that I was happy to make it quiet. Makes it feel "finished"

yea...and also more luxerious too in a way....but i like to think of my car as a muscle car, lol...so I'm willing to make noise...i just want it to be good noise. oh and i dont think u guys have seen the pics of my finished car et...so here they are...

I had a flowmaster 40 on my bone stock motor and it sounded very V8, I even had people ask me when did I drop in a V8 (which made me mad). Then I welded on a magnaflow and it was quiet with a low tone. Hope this helps.

I plan on getting a flowmaster 40 for my 68 C30 with a 292. I actually put one on my 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the inline 4.0 and it sounded so awesome and much louder in a good way, but when I run my 30x11.5 swampers for wheeling...they actually are louder on the highway than the muffler!
