What is the oil capacity of a 292 with a stock pan and regular 1 quart filter? When I added oil to my newly built 292 I added 6 quarts. I cut the new dipstick tube to the same length as my unbuilt/spare 292 and used the old dipstick. It showed 1 quart overfull. Depending on how I read this chart the 292 could take 5, 6, or 7 quarts. My truck was born with a 230 and used 5 quarts w/filter.

It read 6 quarts after you ran and brought the oil pressure up?

I drove it a couple hundred miles before I trimmed the new dipstick tube. This is when I developed a furrowed brow. The book and dipstick don't coincide. I can't see how a 292 would be any different than a 230 or 250 which take 5 quarts. Unless it was a heavy duty application and came with the 90 degree filter adapter and a 2 quart filter.

Of the four 292 engines I have, I know three have a larger pan then the car engines. (the other is a rebuilt early motor with 7/16" bolts so I can't vouch for that one)
I had to swap pans and pickups to put them in a Chevelle.
So 6 qts with filter sounds right.

btw: What year manual is that page from?

I believe the 292 is the only engine that used the 6 qt pan. They have the same bolt pattern and mounting flange as the smaller motors. Over the years many have had pans swapped around so you need to be careful regarding how much oil to add. Putting 6qts in a 292 with the smaller pan definitely results in oil finding a way to escape....

Pete, the manual is a 1965 chevrolet truck owners manual. My oil pans are 292 pans. I wonder what compelled GM to make the 292 6 quarts. I am assuming that if i had a school bus or a C60 with the the 90 degree oil filter adapter depicted in Leo's book and a 2 quart filter like the one listed in the owners manual that my engine would be a 7 quart system.

It was common for GM to increase pan capacity for truck engines. For instance the tall deck Big Block 366 and 427's had a longer pan sump than passenger car pans have, and will not interchange because of the obvious crossmember interference. Since a 292 was a large truck and work horse type engine, it is reasonable to expect that they also had increased capacity pans that might have fitment issues when trying install these pans in a vehicle that didn't have a 292 in it originally. And a few rare occasions that some 292's might have even had the 7 quart or larger oil capacity's.
