Dear Friends,
I'm new here and very excited about being with you. I have a 1964 Chevy Nova SS (numbers matching) with a 194. The engine was bored out and has some cam, headers and was fast.. The story of the car is cataloged in my blog http://brianlarose.blogspot.com/2009/08/starting-on-new-project.html

I have put a TCI front end on the car and now it turns out I need to put a Chevy 250 Oil pan, pickup and dipstick on my 194 engine in order to squeeze it back into the car. So, i am writing here, does anybody have a source for a 250 oil pan, and recommendations for the pickup and dipstick? It seems like a pretty straight forward conversion -- i just need a pointer or 2.

Also, i am going to put an Offenhauser and a 4 BBL on it, looking forward to laying down some serious power.

Your 64 SS is not that Rare.I have a 64SS myself that came Factory L6 PG on the floor, Which made it easy for me to drop a Muncie in it.But most SS back then were L6s But The TRUE SS had a SB block in them as most feel. Which side of the oil pan are you having a issue with?

Brian why change just the pan? Go ahead and put the whole 250 in it. I have one I'd give you if you weren't so far away (I'm in Michigan). Keep looking on craigslist - I've bought 3 in the last year and the most I paid was $75.

You will need to use the pick-up that matches the pan. The easiest way to get all the pieces is look for a complete 230 or 250. Around here they are often on Craigslist in the $50 to $100 range for a core motor. eBay is another possibility for just the parts or a complete motor; you if you win a bid for a complete, the seller may be willing to pull the parts you need to save shipping...

You can probably sell the center sump pan and related parts to another Chevy II fiend. It should cover the cost of the rear sump pieces or possible make you a little profit.

Most subframe kits are set up for a V motor and centered in the subframe. Make sure when you intall the motor, you offset it the same as in the factory clip to keep the trans and driveline staight. Good luck with your project.

That is a very nice blog you have, in a number of ways.
All the best to you and your family on those challenges.

On the 194 vs 250, x2 for me on that.
In my 63 SS I swapped the stock 194 for a stock (tired) 250.
The 194 3 on the tree would just bog off the line.
The 1st thing that 250 did when I popped the clutch was lay 2 black streaks in my driveway.

Measured 0-60mph dropped from 13.0 to 10.7 sec
(remember this is a worn 3 on the tree, takes about a full second for the messy 1-2 shift...)

If you multiply by 2x, using a 250 is like replacing a 396 Rat with a 502 Rat - most of us would "click" on that right away.
All the go-fast parts will work better on a 250 as well. Or of course a 292, but the 250s are nearly give-away as noted above.

Don't forget, you already have a good 194 head that will bump the compression of the 250 up to or around 9.0 !

If he uses a 250 pan on a Chevy II 194, will he have to drill the block for the dip stick?

Did you use the center sump or rear sump oil pan? With some tips from Twisted6, I am using a rear sump from a 250 on my 292 engine, which is going into my 63 Chevy II. Not sure when this is going to happen, as the engine stall keeps getting delayed...
