The casting number on my 250 is G0 2 K78. The block number is 473483. The K78 tells me that the block was cast November 7th, and the "8" tells me the last digit of the year. From this I know that it was cast in 1968 or 1978. Is there anyway I can narrow down the decade? I can't seem to find any information that is helpful. Thanks, Al

Can you get the stamped # from by the dist Pad? You may have to scrape some paint.

Tom; I've been cruising the net and think I've answered my own question. The last 3 letters on the dist pad is the application code. In 1970 they changed this code from a 2 digit number to a 3 digit number. Therefore my engine must be newer than 1968 and therefore it must be a 1978. They didn't make a 250 in'88 did they? I got the info from this web site; http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtmlthanks, Al

I seem to recall that GM didn't start stamping #s on the dizzy pad until after '68-but maybe that was just on trucks-so if it has those #s there, it may indicate later than '68

They have been stamping these # near the dist since atleast 1965 maybe earlier. The # designates the trans option, HP and model of car. Even the build Month and date. Tom

By the numbers it looks like my 250 was built in Flint in November 1978 and came out of a truck with auto trans. Thanks to all for your help. Al

The difference is that the last 2 letters on your code indicates the application code. From 1970 onward the application code is the last 3 letters. Mine is "TAL". The "T" says the engine came from a truck. If there was a "C" instead of a "T" it would mean that the engine came from a car. The last 2 letters indicate model info such as auto trans. Al
