ok guys i have another question or two for you
what would be the better for me here i have a stock chevy 250 soon to have headers dual ext bigger cam and four bbl setup should i stay with the stock powerglide and if so what can i do to it to make it better or should i go with a 200-4R and why?
sorry guys just trying to learn whats best

Personnaly, I always liked the gear spacing of the 200-4r over a 700R4.
It has a taller OD,less rpms on the highway.
Having a stock 250 will work fine or even a hopped up 250 for the 200-4R.
The 200's out of the Grand nationals are the better ones to get ,but w/a good rebuild it should be fine from a well known 2004R rebuilder
Plus get a lock-up conver & mileage will really shine over a PG.

There are mores items where a 200 is better than a PG.

For the most part a well built PG are great for a light weight High HP drag car,that is mainly & pretty much the only way I would recommend a PG,,,,or you just want to keep the vehicle OG = original.

PG's are OK,,,but old school,,,less take off power,no lock up converter = less mileage

To be honest,I have not checked prices latley.

My friend owns a custom fab shop & is a trans specialist.

If youd like I can ask him how much for a mild 2004R build outright price.

Let me know.

Unequivocally I recommend the 2004r. My rule of thumb is Powerglides are for track-only cars that weigh less than 3000 lbs with more than 600 hp. Or, for an original restoration, but I would think long and hard about that one. On the street, with 450hp or less - 2004r. Above that - 4l80e. Of course, these choices require more setup, and cost more, but to have a car you can really use I think you have to invest in driveability and in no place is it more important than in the transmission. Well, except for the brakes. \:\)

Here is some FYI.
98% of the 2004r's came with multi pattern meaning they can be Chevy or BOP. BUT......some of the diesels and some Caddy's had JUST the BOP pattern

PS.. To be clear tho, they never made just a Chevy Pattern one.

Have not checked lately,but PG's do not sell for that much.
Maybe $100 ???

A good 200R4 stock rebuilt to higher HP units ,,,hmmm,400-1500 I am just guessing.
Can check the Turbo Buick forum,for some used or fresh rebuilt trans.

$250 used w/ 6 mo junkyard warranty - return for another one
$100 junkyard - rebuildable with a parking lot warranty
$600-800 for quality stock rebuild

There are plenty to be found in junkyards - at least nearby here.
