I am putting together a 292 six to go into a 74 chevy pickup. I am trying to get 300 Hp, more torq, good pull & better sound for this truck. is this asking to much? what valve should I put into this head? the block is going to be bored 30 over & a little better than mild cam, not sure what tranny I am going to use just yet. I am using a 390 4 barr. carb & headers that I am found at a swapmeet.I have watched all the diff. ways to put togather motors/heads.I got leo's book. help I am confused I am new in the inline crowd.

I'm also new to this six banger stuff but from what I've read is 1.94-1.60 is the sizes of choice. Thats what I'm going with and I'm looking for about 500 hp sooner or later.

You just need cyl head work, raise compression, mild camshaft.
Lump port,porting,camshaft w/appropriate specs,talk w/comp cams for that,mill the cyl head.
I am thinking the 390 carb might be a bit small, but will work just fine.
If you really want some added torque, add some DCOE Webers, but they are pricey.
I always prefer a soild cam over a slow reacting cam, epecially a Clifford hyd cam & there price is not great either. Not impressed w/their cams @ all.My car would always run better running other cams than w/a Clifford cam.
I ran solid cams on the street & they do not require much adjusting after they are broken in.
When choosing a solid over a hyd cam,,,you can run up to about 10 degrees more duration for example,,A hyd cam w/a duration @ .050 of 210 degrees duration, & with a solid cam w/roughly same specs, you can increase cams duration of 220 degrees duration @ .050 & get about the same idle quality,,,but will make more power everwhere + added top end power.

Yep 1.94/ 1.60 are good valves sizes to go with. While reworking the head , doing the bolt in lumps and port/ relieving the head will be needed to get to the 300 hp level.
The 390 carb will come up just shy of the 300 mark, still a good choice. A Clifford 270 cam and Clifford intake will also help. Tom

I would think a 600 would work good. I have a 302 stock small block chevy that came with a 780 but it will spin pretty tight.
