Hello Dave

When installing a new cam gear onto a new cam It is Best to OIL Heat the Gear. (alum Gear)Then press it onto the cam. Because if the gear is not heat You can ALMOST Count on the fact IT will come off. Because the alum Will sheer Out from the center as the gear is being Pressed onto the Cam. Now as to the umbrellas No they are not need Esp. if you just had the head rebuilt. and new guides installed. Or at least Renurld. Hope this helps }[oooooo]

Ok What is the best way to "oil heat" a gear? This is a new term to me even though I know why it is done. What is the advantage of oil heat over just heat more even distribution of the heat?
Thanks
Glenn

Yes I put it in a pan of 10w30 then preheat the over to 400-500 degrees let it sit there for 15-20 mins. It is also helpfull to put the cam in the freezer But Not realy needed. It can also be done with out the oil But I prefur to. Just lay the gear on a old cookie sheet. And I find useing welding gloves to handle the gear Once removed from the offen and have a friend Hold the cam while in the press. Another thing That is good to do is to Bolt the gear in place That way you don't have to worry about it EVER Walking off The cam. hope this helps }[oooooo]

The oil is good to spread the heat evenly and keep the gear from warping. It also prevents the aluminum from oxidizing in the oven.
