Hi, I've tried everything, and I can't figure this problem out. My camshaft and lifters were worn out, so I got a new camshaft and lifters. I had the gear pressed on by an auto machine shop, and the thrust plate clearance is .005". I put the crank gear on by heating it in the oven and hitting it on with a hammer and a large socket.

I installed the camshaft, and the thrust plate sat flush against the block, but the camshaft gear is ~.03" forward of the crank gear.

I have checked the endplay in the crank, and its .007". Linked are a few pictures of the problem and a link to my stovebolt thread about it.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what would be causing this? I'm getting ridiculously frustrated and confused by this.

Thats normal. If it were a timing chain and gear set you would have something to worry about since their alignment would be more critical. You verified the thrust of both the cam and crank and see they are both in spec. Put a dial indicator on the outside face of the cam gear and rotate it to see if it is crooked or shows to be wobbly. If it isn't out by more than a few thousandths, I don't think you have a problem to be concerned with. What does it look like on the back side of the gears, is the cam gear thicker than the crank gear to start with. Contact the gear manufacturer if you have doubts still after you check the gear face runout.
