How 'bout getting paid to take an engine?

Buy something like this:
http://www.copart.com/c2/homeSearch.html...=SEARCH_RESULTS

1)Take what you need
2)Sell: seats, wheels, tires, rear end, tail lights
3)Profit

Alright, one more hint on the peformance/$ equation:

Take one of the engines above +

2003-2004 Duramax Turbo (all over for under $250)

+ High octane fuel

= OMG Chassis Twist!

Wish I could bid. You have to have a license, or go through a broker that will cost you an extra $700 or so.

Limequat, I was thinking of a HE351W off a 6.7L Cummins.

Do you know how they compare (IIRC the Cummins has a lower redline).

Of course I would really prefer the HE351VNT, just have to sort out how to control it. \:\)

I've seen it everywhere from stuff that looks NASA-ish to stuff that looks like a steam boiler. ;\)

He351 is just an updated HX35. It's a sweet turbo, but doesn't flow enough for a 4.2 Might work for a 250 though. I was looking at the HE431Ve (I think) before I found the duramax unit. Really nice turbo, but I didn't want to screw around with the CAN controller. The updated duramax units use good ol' PWM control. You could control that with a throttle position sensor and a 555 timer circuit - wait, which board is this?

No alternator, starter, PS pump, ECM, wiring, etc. Add $1000. Do you have a divorced bell trans to bolt up? add $1400. Oh, you do have a commercial dock for shipping, right? Since that's a requirement.

Still a lot of go for not much more than a similar HP SBC.

Only if you are unlucky....

I got a complete '05 engine (all acc.), trans, harness, PCM, for < $500 - had to pull it out myself though.

Some other additions....

$420 Watertown NY

$449 Syracuse NY

$449 WAREHAM, MA

There has to be at least 20 engines on ebay now for under $500.

These are all the early engines, the only one to avoid are the 2002's unless you can hear it run.

The early engines were all 275HP, but there has to be at least 20 to 30 HP bottled up in the cylinder head exhaust port. Nothing that an inliner can't handle \:\)

Clarification

"These are all the early engines, the only one to avoid are the 2002's unless you can hear it run. "

If you are going to put darton sleeves & good rods in it then the 2002 block is fine. GM had some issues with the sleeves in the '02 engines - if its still running now 9 years later - its most likely good.

Please forgive my ignorance. Has anyone done one of these swaps? Did they use the factory computers? Got my gears turning, but being a tech at a dealer all I can foresee with a swap like this is electrical headaches.

Yes that are quite a few swaps occuring, a lot of them are into Jeeps and Toyota 4x4's.

Limequat here swapped one into a supra. He is running stock GM electronics and has published a "cheat sheet" for the PCM wiring. If you don't want to by the needed tuning s/w he can do the mod's for you at the cost of the license.

There is 10-12 wire to connect the GM PCM plus a relay for the fuel pump.

I'm running mine using measquirt. For batch fire and wasted spark operation there are:

Outputs

a) 2 fuel injector outputs (3 injector per output)& +12V hot in run/crank
b) 3 coil trigger outputs ( 2 coils per output)& +12 hot in run/crank
c) fuel pump relay output & 12 V hot all time

Inputs

d) VR crank sensor 2 wires
e) MAP sensor - 3 wires
f) TPS sensor - 3 wires
g) coolant sensor - 2 wires
h) IAT sensor - 2 wires
i) Heated O2 sensor - 4 wires. (or a wide band O2 - innovate)

other

j) tachometer output.

Power and ground as needed. Like 8 wires (1 x 12V hot in run/crank & 7 ground wires to the block)

The engine will run fine with out the VVT working.

I have a good base tuneup that I can share for the MS controller. You will need a laptop to tune with.

Also you will need to install a cable type throttle body.

OH $485 with engine harness and acc. clean!

You would be hard pressed to buy a offy/clifford intake and a carb for this price..... and maybe end up with 180HP on a 250...

IL $500 Complete engine with harness and PCM

AL $487.50

MA $499

Some more dirt cheap power..!

Get one of these - add a junk yard duramax turbo and make 450HP easy...

engine 400
turbo 100
injectors 200 used
fuel pressure reg 50
harness and tune from limequat $499 ready to go.
bell housing from GM $100
Trans used from a 5.3 LS $300

Call it $1800 all said and done... $4/hp

Don't want to mess with EFI, build a 4bbl intake and blow through it. The engine doesn't care how it gets its gas..

The ignition side with boost retard can be done for $250. See the EDIS thread.

$400! Rosemount, MN,

$400 ROCHESTER, NH

$425 Cades SC

Menahga, $450 MN

Mogadore, Ohio $450

Albany, NY

Stuyvesant, New York $499.95
