Hi,
I have a transplant engine in my 49' Chevy 3100 pickup.
Numbers are difficult to read # 8701881/ GM2.
Another set GM 15/ 3835637.
And finally B12 887
066
576.
Can anyone narrow down my possibilities? Rust is making it difficult.
Thank you for your time.

Tom,

What kind of engine is it? Those numbers do not seem to be for a 216/235/261, but I cannot be sure.

Where are those numbers on the block? Some photographs might help someone identify the engine.

If it is a 235/261 stovebolt, Tim Lederman from the Stovebolt.com site has provided some web pages that help in finding and decoding the numbers on the early 235s and for the later 235 and 261 engines.

Hi Hoyt,
After cleaning off some grease I verified cylinder #3701887 as belonging to a 235 engine; however I also see the "captain bars" as a fairly good indicator of a 261 which makes me wonder if it is a combo? I also see GM2 clearly displayed under the number. Any suggestions for the new guy? Thanks, Tom

What is the casting number on the passenger side of the crankcase near the front of the engine? The 3701887 indicates a '53 235" head with 2 valve cover studs.
