So I guess that is a Cliffenhauser intake then?
It is correctly identified by 67pete300 as an offy of course.

Super car, there are probably many stock Nova's heavier than that stripped 230 Chevelle. My Gonkulator puts its 250 at about 205hp, with another 30hp waiting for the Langdon dual iron exhaust.

Thanks Tom! I haven't been on here as much lately, but all my knowledge for the build came from this site. I'll get a thread going over here again to return the favor.

And I'm pumped about Duececoupe's hp predictions! I'd love to get it on a dyno sometime. Even so, I plan to cobble together a few Chevy air cleaner stickers. Something like "Turbo Thrift 250, 250 Hp."

x2 on the weight - my guess was 3200 curb (full tank & spare, no driver)

I forgot to mention - the 250 I did the intake&carb shootout with - it is originally from none other than a 67 Chevelle! (engine code is CS)

I haven't weighed it, but you're pretty close. If I remember correctly the book said something around 3100. It has NO options. No carpet, no domelight, no armrests in the back, no power anything...

Last time I rented a Uhaul to tow it I had to fudge and call it a Chevy II to get their calculator to let me do it. But they don't know I have the bare bones model!

I am going to guess it at 240-250 HP after the exhaust work. I know what head work he has.

Still want to see some vids of it driving. Heck just your driving impression would be good. Compare it to the old engine. Tom

It is about 8000 times better than the old stock engine. It pulls very strong in first and second. It is a three on the tree so shifting takes some time. Third is good too but the Saginaw has a big drop between second and third. The 4bbl carb and air cleaner I have whistles when it opens up and starts sucking air. I don't know if that means I need a bigger or less restrictive air cleaner. But the engine has a low growl and the pickup is very good. I have chirped the tires shifting to second, but I'm hesitant to try a real burnout with the brand new engine. My homemade throttle linkage has a shorter throw than I'd like and I will eventually rebuild it with slightly different angles to try and get some more pedal travel.

Bottom line is that it is a whole new car. Once I get the exhaust done and suspension tightened up, it will be even better.

Yup, 3rd gear in the Saginaw 3 speed tranny is a killer power robber,or maybe I should say accelration killer,,,maybe w/a turbo,it would not matter as much.
I remember when I use the Saginaw 3 speed, I used to have to fan the clutch to get the engine back into the power band when going into 3rd gear.

A wide ratio Muncie pulled much better than the 3 speed when I made the swap.
This is when I raced @ LACR 3000 ft + altitude & ran 14.3's just after I removed my T50 5 speed trans from a Chevy Monza.

BTW, the BW T50 5 speed trans are very weak, I broke both of them in a short time.

An easy transmission swap is to a Muncie or Saginaw 4 speed, no driveshaft change required, just a shifter thru the floor where it belongs. it made a world of difference and a lot more fun in my Nova wagon with just about the same engine mods. If you use the saginaw you can make it into an overdrive!

Update:

Finally got the exhaust installed this week. See link below for video of it running:

I tried to follow the exhaust advice I got here. The shop I used said they could only fit 24" Cherry Bombs so it is pretty loud. I'm still adjusting to the sound (mostly the loud BRAAAP under hard acceleration) but I generally love it.

It drives tons better and revs easily. Still lots of little things to sort out. But the big stuff is done and I can't wait to drive the heck out of it this summer!

Thanks for all the help here. I'll try to start a summary thread with all the particulars of the build for others asking the same questions I did.

I would try a crossover tube to help with the raspyness of the glasspacks.

I know first hand they help w/V-8's, but not sure if it will w/a inline? I would tend to think it will help.
I used to run dual 2" w/turn downs before the rear axle then switched to a single 2/5" exhaust to the rear bumper, which BTW,was quiter.
I would try it out & see first hand results.

A crossover or X pipe can turn the braap or raspiness into a gurgle.

I tend to prefer a growl myself, but that's me.

If you try a crossover and don't like it, you can plug it and drill progressively larger holes in the plug to tune the sound.

I would be very interested in how you built your motor.
I just bought a 63 BelAir 4dr, 230/6, 3on the tree with 27,000 original miles. Really a sweet ride. Wish it was a 2dr but then again there is something kinda neat about a 4dr.
Made up my mind before I brought it home I would keep the six as every body has a small block.
Look forward to hearing more as I am new to the inline stuff and I am also new to this forum.

I built it based off of what I read on this forum. Search and read for yourself. You can find alot more details about my build here:

The real short story is spend your money on the head, intake and exhaust. The first thing I did was gain 28 cubic inches by getting a 250 to replace the 230 and rebuilding it with stock replacement .040 over pistons. I looked at fancier pistons for more compression but they are all expensive. Then I bought a lump port head with 1.84/1.60 valves from a member of this forum. Both the head and block were decked a bit for some more compression. I'd guess it is about 8.8:1. I stuck in a Comp 260H cam (pn CL61-233-4) and bolted on an Offy intake with an Edelbrock 500cfm carb. Other popular choices (not mine) are the Clifford intake and Holley 390 carb. For exhaust it was Langdon's split manifolds and true dual exhaust through a pair of Cherry Bomb glasspacks.

Have fun with your BelAir, you have the same thoughts about the six that I did. You get a much bigger reaction at the cruise night with the six than with a run of the mill sbc.
