I bought the external coil HEI from Tom Langdon

Anybody have hints on how/where to mount it to my Chevy 250? I heard mention of the side cover bolts, and found something on Rockauto that says it is an ignition coil mounting strap but it doesn't look like it would work.

I've found fancy Mallory coils that have cool finned aluminum mounting brackets but they are $89 and I can't find the bracket separately.

Thoughts or pictures?

Second question: anyone have quick recommendations for a set of HEI plug wires? I'll admit I'm pretty baffled by all the choices, most of which are "universal" or "V8".

For wires, HEI was standard on many 250's. A factory set for a 81 Chevy pickup would be good (that was remore coil HEI). I personally don't like Accel wires, had 2 sets with at least 1 bad wire). Universal is fine but spend the money to get a stripper/crimper.

Side covers have a stud in place of one of the bolts to mount the coil. If you aren't using it you can use the accessory mount hole on the front middle of the head. This takes a simple strap type bracket with 1 bolt securing both ends, most often seen with round coils.

I used Magnecor wires . . . they have a good website and lots of options for premade sets.
