I have a friend that is interested in buying one of my 'backup' inline engines. The one that I'd sell him is a 194 out of a '63 Nova. It has about 5000 miles since it was rebuilt. It didn't have anything special done to it, just a 'stock' rebuild is what I was told.

What is a fair price?

Figure out how much you have invested in it - not counting any of your labor - and start there.

Fresh valve job and hardened seats. Bored 040 over.

I bought this engine as part of a package deal - it had a 390 carb, clifford exhaust and headers, HEI, etc attached to it. I was holding onto it as a backup in case the 292 didn't work out for some reason, but now I feel comfortable getting selling it. If I sell it, I'll still have the 194 I pulled out of my nova, as well as a 250 from a chevelle.

How much did you pay for the engine package?
You are not selling the Clifford, intake & headers or 390 carb, HEI to go along w/the 194?

For the most part, IMO, most people do not want a 194 engine, unless they are looking to get the best mileage possible.

I actually sold the intake, headers and HEI for more than I paid for the entire package.

He asked for a 250... I told him I didn't have one of those for sale, but had a 194. He said as long as it bolted in, he didn't care what the cubes were. The car (i think he said a '51 chevy) has a 194/230/250 in it that doesn't have any oil pressure.

I was thinking I'd want to get $400 for it to part with it.

You may have started a new vocation for yourself of buying and selling car parts. $400 is a friends price, now if you can do that a few times a week , \:\) \:\)

I'm a bad salesman!

The reason why I ended up with everything (the package also included a complete exhaust system for a 1st/2nd gen nova), is b/c I knew of another guy in the nova 'club' that needed a bunch of the stuff. He agreed to buy it from me if I picked it up as a package from the other guy (figured I could same all of us a few $), but then he backed out. It took me a year to sell off the exhaust system, intake and HEI. I had 3 separate guys agree to buy it, then never come through. I held it for 3 months for one guy and when I finally sold it was was upset at me!

If $400 is a friends price, what's a normal price?
