Guys - I know there have to be more than a few guys that know how to do it right when it comes to doing a mild engine build on a Chevy 250 or 292 in Los Angeles, just don't where to find a decent builder with a good reputation. Seems like all I can find so far want to put a SBC in my '66 C10.
Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

If you want something different put a late model vortec inline 6 in...
If interested search vortec 4200 on here for lots of details.

Unless you the 250 and 292 (as well as the stuff you need for your build), I'd suggest looking at the vortec 4200 also. If I was starting from scratch, I would've considered it for my '63 Nova. I see you're in LA, are you going to the Inliner's BBQ in fallbrook later this month? Btw, I used to have a '66 C-10 also: Sometime I wish I still had it, or one like it.

63ChevyII - that is a beautiful C10,hopefully one day mine can get to that point! I don't know about the inliners meeting, but if you want to pass on info I would love to come through. Not sure my truck can make quite that far right now, but I would love to learn from you guys. I am more than a bit green when it comes to engines.

63ChevyII - Thanks for the info on the inliners shirts, etc. Have any more pics of your C10 by chance? It is almost the exact color combo I was thinking of going for, a darker battleship grey with red rims. It looks like you kept the six lug set up? Were those stock rims? What did you run in it?

RE: the meeting, you should contact inliners member radar via pm or Frank Hainey @ 760-451-3041 or @ grnchevy@roadrunner.com here are some pics of the truck: 66 C-10 gallery Wheels are Pete Paulsen smoothies, 17x8 and 17x10 I think. I didn't build the truck, pretty much bought it as pictured.

thanks limequat and 63ChevyII -
Seems like the 4200 is a viable option for cost and hp at the wheels, seems like an initial search there are some issues with the oil pan that will need to be addressed, fuel delivery system, and wiring. Anything else that should be a red flag as I start to figure out if this is a swap I want to make?
I love the old school look of the stovebolt, but man would I love 100 more horses without using a SBC

Did you say oldschool? That's an injected 4.2 with ITBs. Awesome! For a stockish 4.2, you'll need a dropout with wiring, PCM, exhaust stub, and gas pedal. I can hook you up with a standalone harness and pcm reflash. EFI has the pretty, cast rear sump pans. Colorado trans bolts up, you need a custom flywheel from Jerry Weight. Hook up a fuel pump, weld mounts, burn rubber, get 20+ MPG. thanks limequat and 63ChevyII -

wow, that is epic....now you have the wheels turning limequat. Where are you in Detroit? Lived and worked there for a little while, miss the city, don't miss the weather.

I'd like to put a 4200 in a 1st gen nova, but oil pan and exhaust manifold options are big deterrents.

What's the problem with the exhaust manifold? Wrong side?

Agreed x2 Once you feel how flat the 4200 torque curve is ... "it'll blow the old iron out of your mind.." 275HP not enough add a J/Y turbo - 8 psi == 400 HP I do have a rear sump oil pan...
