Apologies if this is a repeat question. I did a search and came up bupkiss.

So, while pulling the disk brake calipers and mounts from a 3rd Gen Trans Am, I got a wild hair and yanked the posi third member with the intent of seeing if it would go into my first-gen 10-bolt rear. Has anyone out there tried that before?

At face value, my take was that it shouldn't be that hard--given that the spline count on the axle is correct (which I dont know for sure). Of course, with my luck it will end up being virtually impossible. . .

Any insight will be appreciated. Except for calling me stupid or insane. I already know that.

I think the 3rd gen rear axle is a 7 1/4"?

Your first gen is 8.20.. Going from off the top of my head.

Yep. . . Just answered my own question a second before you posted, Hank. It's a no-go.

Well, I guess I got a spare 3rd gen posi if I ever need one. . . That's $50 down the drain. Oh well, live and learn.

Good news is that the 3rd gen caliper brackets will work perfectly! And even if you factor in the $50 bucks for that 3rd member, I'm still way ahead.

Which posi is it? (gov loc?)

OK, qualifier: I may not be the best source of info on this, but. . .

It's not a governor lock type. My understanding is that was a truck-only application. This one is most definitely a clutch-type (Eaton is virtually the same thing). Vehicle was an 84 Trans Am, most likely with the WS6 package (hence the rear disc brakes), but I'd have to pull the vin to be sure. It's the 7.5". Dramatically smaller than the 8.2 on my Camaro.

Kind of a bummer. I was pretty excited to find it. . . New ones look to be $500+
