I would like to know the rough weight of a 250 ci complete engine. I am replacing mine with a 4200 this fall and would like an idea of the weight difference. I beleive the 4200 complete engine is about 400 lbs. Is that correct?

I've also read 400 lbs. Not sure if that includes accessories, flex plate, wet or dry or whatever.

The complete 283/327 type small block used to be about 580 lbs with bell housing and flywheel (which was perhaps some 40-50 lbs LESS than the old stovebolt sixes) and the 230 type six used to be about 100 lbs less equipped the same way. The 250 could be concievably maybe 20-25 lbs more due to the 6 extra counterweights. The 292 would be perhaps 25-50 lbs more than that due to taller block and even heavier counterweights. My guesses from various magazines = small block V8=580#
230 six=480#
250 six=500#
292 six=540#
235 six=620#

I have read the 250 6 is about 100 lbs lighter than a standard SBC. So roughly 450 LBS?
I know I can pick up a 250 block w/a crank in it & put it into a engine stand, I cannot do the same w/a SBC block w/a crank installed & put it into a engine stand.

Thanks for all the info. I needed to know if I had to modify my suspension to accomodate the 4200. Looks like the 4200 is a little lighter and may bring the noseup a bit but not enough to worry about. Thanks again.

Anyone have any of those engines on a freight scale? The reason I ask;10 years ago I had a complete 302 GMC Shipped to me and picked it up at the local freight terminal.It was strapped to a pallet sitting on the certified scale.This was a complete engine as pulled, with flywheel and clutch housing.The total weight 640 pounds ,the tare (pallet)was 50 so the whole lump was 590 pounds.The freight tag on the engine from the shipping terminal was the same more or less.So minus the clutch ,flywheel and housing would add up to a 302 being 530-540 pounds with intake, exhaust,starter and generator.

Another thing to consider is your transmission weight. The 4200 was only availible with a 4l60e. If your old ride was 3sp or 4sp equipped, you may be around the same weght.
