I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere here before, but I haven't been able to find it.
I'm running a 261 bored to 270 with a mild cam, two one's, etc. with a T-5 behind it. Can I get any idea from some of you members to tell me how a 2004R behind my 261 would help or hurt the performance of my vehicle comparatively speaking.
Thanks!

When you say performance, how do you intend to measure it?

1/4 mile times, fuel economy, easier on your left leg?

Buffalo sells what it takes to adapt one in, so all we need is to know, to help you, is why you are interested in switching from row your own to automatic.

I just resently switch my T-5 for a 700R4 with the help of Tom Lowe. I have a 261 ci bored, cam, 4 barrel. With the T-5 I had a 2.73 gears in it because I do a lot of highway driving. Tom Langdon suggest using 3.55 to 4.11 axle ratio with the 700R4 or 2004R to get the maximun performance. So far I'm very happy with the 2.73 ratio. It doesn't lug the engine in town and out on the highway I can run 75 MPH at 1,800 RPM's. And that's what I was looking for.

I don't know much about the 2004r but I don't think that you will lose any performance with it.

Never thought that I would be happy not shifting the 53, but I guess old age has caught up with me.

The T-5 ended up being a full time job for my right arm. I don't mind rowing, but I like to use both arms, so my choice now is to not use either arm!
I'm interested in being able to get out of the way when I need to and to be able to jump on it and it react reasonable well. I don't want a drag truck, but one that will keep up with the traffic and sometimes pass the traffic.
The main stuff with the engine will be a full pressure 1962 261 with .060 over aluminum pistons, milled head, McGurk Super Comp CH-213BB cam, aluminum pistons, Mallory HEI, balanced and polished, rework valves, milled head, 2 X 1 intake, Fenton headers.

You need to pick your unit carefully. GM made a lot of these and some of them aren't very strong. I'm using one from an '85 Monte Carlo 5.0 (non SS) between a mild 292 and 3.50 geared 9" Furd and couldn't be happier.
I sent you an E with the info I have.

The 2004R only had about 10 year run. Parts and availibility may be an issue. If you already have one, go for it. Personally, I would go with the 700R4. GM, only recently quit using them in their trucks. They'd been using them for over 30 years AND continually improved them. Most parts from the 700R4 and 4L60 line are interchangable, so upgrading isn't an issue. Plus, there is a ton of hardcore parts out there. If you go the the 700R4, I would recomend a shift kit from TransGo or Superior. I used a kit from TransGo in my truck, and it made all the difference int he world!

With the 261, I would stick with a 3.90 or 3.73 gear ratio. I've had 3 vehicles with a 3.42 rearend and they ALL could've used a little more RPM going down the highway.

I run a 700r4 behind a 270 gmc with 370 gears and 25 in. tall tires and its just about perfect. I would like to try some 390s as I could be a little lower geared. I can't imagine using 273 gears that's awful tall gearing for the lock up clutches.
