Hope someone can help me. have 1950 chevy styleline deluxe 4 door sedan. Vin # inside drivers door has been changed. Dept of Motor Vehicles will not accept that. Where else on the body, frame, etc, is the vin (serial number) stamped,
data trim plate on cowl does not include a vin or serial number for the car.

I don't think Chevy started stamping numbers on the frame until 1955.

Your VIN number is the engine number, in California, in the late '50s and the 60s, every time we changed an engine we would go to the DMV and get a new pink slip for $5. I tried to explain that to our local DMV now and, of course, they said it 'never happened'.

Perhaps this is true in a re-titled car but not originally. The OEM VIN is found on a plate on the drivers side door. These were attached with screws so I guess perhaps they could easily go missing . . .

Mine is in tact and has a prefix is 9GKH. Which can be decoded here:

Engine serial numbers for '49 had a prefix of GAA (Flint) or GAM (Tonawanda). In '50 the prefixes were HAA and HAM respectively. Those can be decoded here:

A replacement engine fitted years later may not be coded at all - or may be coded with numbers that aren't contemporary with the vintage of the vehicle.

How has it been altered? Did you buy it in NC? Do you have a Bill of Sale showing the VIN that is on the car?

Don't think you need the original VIN . . . just proof that you are legally in possession of the car. No?
