Today in my auto tech class my teacher gave me the approval to take home a inline 6 250 block, cam and head home. He said I can have the whole thing. It has been up in storage for YEARS (probably from the 70s when the school opened he said). The cylinder walls are nice, etc. How good are these engines? Is it worth me putting it together and putting it in something? I have a 48 chevy that I MAY use but doubt it since I plan to put a 496 in that and pro street it but I was thinking about making a T bucket or such and using it maybe.

What are your oppinions, thoughts, etc?
Thanks a lot!

Shawn-

Dear Shawn;

One of our members (Larry) runs his 250 AKA "Twisted Six" and has a lot of trophys. Perhaps some records too.

Value is in the mind of the beholder.

Shawn,
It all depends on what you want. 250s are great motors and can be modified to run with small cube small blocks. If you want the torque of the 8.1, this is not your motor. If you want something that will turn heads, makes great sounds, and is fun to pick on small V8s with, go for it.

Pick-up a copy of Leo Santucci's Inline Power Manual to see what can be done. There is more to making an inline run than just ordering parts out of catalog. If you really want to learn about building engines and not just throwing parts together, the 250 will be a very good learning tool.

Take the 250 for the T Bucket. Bost the compression to about 9-1 It will be fine on the Cheap Pump gas. Install a 307 flat top piston. Go with a nice step or two over a Rv style cam. Something in the 500-560 Lift range dur. of about 260. with a lobe sep. of a 108? 110-112 And You'll more then enough power& tork in the T Bucket to smoke the Tires Off it. Or Take that stock compresion and add a Turbo to it with about 6-8 psi of boost.

Twisted 6, thanks for the info man! I am going to be taking this thing home Monday I think. The dumpster guys came and put it in the truck to take off to the dump and at the last second my teacher saw it and ran and got it again because it was outside. All there is to it is the block, head, valves in it and springs, etc and the cam. The head has these little cracks but not on any important areas. Hard to explain where but when I get this thing home I will take pics of it.
Also, where can I buy these parts for this thing? I don't even have a car or nothing to put this in yet and I would love to built a T bucket but I dont have some 6,000 bucks or more for just a t bucket frame and body.

twisted, you said that you could throw a turbo right on the 250 stock, would you have to fab some sort of water sprayer like leo said, I was really lookin to turbo the nova but ran into alot of dead ends after leos book, and didnt want to spend alot of dollars on it.(sounded like draw thru was cheaper than blow thru, but didnt say what the power difference was ) thanx

Thanks again! I will check out the book and all. I am going to be picking up the engine tomarrow now so I will try getting pics and posting them on here. Also, I am not getting reply's in my email about these forums for some reason so keep forgetting to check back here for replys. I will have to make sure the email notification thing is checked again but I am pretty sure it is.

Twisted6, here is my newest idea. I have a 48 Chevy coupe and was going to make a pro street out of it with a 496 bbc but now thinking about how I wont have money for that now since I have this new 66 truck. So what I am thinking is air bagging the 48 (so I can throw the rear down, make it a tail dragger when wanted, etc) and then throw this 250 I am picking up tomarrow and getting a good tranny somewhere, etc and put this car together with less money than the pro street would have taken and chop the top, etc etc. Well anyways, what kind of tranny can fit on these 250s? Anything like a 400 or 350? On the side time I am going to build a 383 stroker or a 454 to put in later but I will build that on the side in the garage as time and money allows and put it in one day.
I am hoping I can find parts for this 250 for cheap and get it together for cheap and find a nice tranny too. All I have to the 250 is of course the block, oil pan, crappy head with valves, springs, etc that are probably no good and a cam that looks to have a bit of wear.
New parts look pretty darn expensive if I wanted to get ALL the parts. So any info on where to get these would be great! Thanks again for anymore info guys!

Bump!
Does anyone know what kind of tranny can hook up to a 250? Will a 350 or turbo 400 work? That might have been a dumb question but I have NO CLUE about these engines.

Awsome! So say I get a built up turbo 400 and put it up to the 250 for now until I can build a 383 or 454, will that be alright?
Thanks again and sorry for the many questions. I just want to clear this up before I go out and just buy any tranny.
