Just got of the horn with some friends of mine. He has a Sweet 292 sitting in his garage with very low miles on it out of a motorhome.

Its going to be fittin really nice in the new 63 stepside I am getting.

$400 for a low mile 292 is ok isnt it?

Actually just got comfirmation that the truck is a 1962 for sure.

Will I have any problems putting this 292 into it?
I know the motor mounts are different than in my 64.

If it's a 1962 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton truck, chances are excellent that the six in question is actually a 235 (at best a 261) and not a 292. 292s did not become available until the 1963 model year (which probably started sometime late in 1962).

Your friend probably does not have a 292. Some people who really don't know straight sixes well believe the 235s and 261s are 292s because they are physically larger and heavier than the 230s & 250s (and even the 292).

Let us know what you find. If you were closer I could get you a 292 core for $150 ($200 tops).

the 62 chevy truck comes with a Cracked 235.

My friend (also truck builder) has a few motors sitting around from his previous towing company. His motor sitting on blocks in his garage is a 292 with Very low miles out of a motorhome Camper complete with an RV cam.

He also has some (2 I think) 230's and one 235 inline six motors all runners with low miles that he is sitting on for projects and starts them every so often to keepem wet.

This 292 comes complete with intake, exhaust manifold, Carburetor, flywheel to match my 3 speed tranny.Comes with Everything needed to run it.
All I have to do is drop it in and wire it up so I think its worth $400 complete like this though.

But I will in fact throw it on hte ole engine stand , Clean it up, Change all fluids and Oil Pump seals gaskets and whatever. Then try out my new paint gun and compressor on it (enter big smiles here).

I can also get a rebuilt front end from him really cheap as well for the 64 stepside, I just want the best looking truck as a keeper though.

But like you say, a core would be worth $100-$150 or so.

Randy, If you want to give it the vintage touch, paint the engine Detroit Diesel Green, kind of an apple green. GM used to paint the 261s this color and when they went to the early 292 they continued painting the first year['63 model year]engines this green. Either by tradition, or they just had a lot of green paint left over. I think the 230s and 250s were blue. After that the 292s were Chevy Engine Orange -- at least by '67 and '68.

I bought a '63-model year 292 as a core from a guy for $100. So i'd say that was fair. It is that green. My '67 and '68 292 blocks are Chevy Engine Orange. Always were. Even if I help it out with VHT, now and then.
On that '63 block there is also a fuel pump of the rebuildable type. Since a new [disposable] type pump from NAPA is cheaper than the rebuild kit for the old type, I never bothered. But is there any improvement in the rebuildable type? Could it be HiPo-ed?
