I know that there is no replacement for displacemnet, but I cannot find 292s. 250s are a lot easier to find. Where is a good place to look for 292s? Is there a bigger inline six cylinder.

Only bigger L6 is the gmc 302 try checking older Truck bone yards. if there was a place it be nice to find a old UPS grave yard or bread or milk trucks even some of the smaller chevy school bus had 292s But yes you are right They are Getting harder to find Theres a scrap yard not far from that gets them in once in awhile I have seen many in chevy Vans just never had the money to buy them And that mades me sad to see them scraped. }[oooooo]

I also had a hard time finding a 292, and all I could find were ones with the integrated manifold heads, so I was going to just use one of those and put a 250 head on it. That was until I found one in a Massey Ferguson soy bean combine. Massey used 292's in some of the old combine, but I don't no how long or what years. If there are any kinda big-crop fields around there, ask some of the farmers if they have any old broken down combines and you'll probally find one.

I must be lucky up here in Canada. A lot of cars/trucks in Canada used 6s instead of V8s, so they're quite common here. Maybe it had to do with higher gas prices here or something, but my local buy & sell is always listing 292s (that's how I got mine).

The ones I see at the yards always have their manifolds swiped, presumably to replace still runners that have cracked.

Well tahnks for al the suggestions. I live in San Diego CA. I guess that I will hit the "auto dismantlers" and see what I find. I just hate those places because everything seems to be "50% of new replacement" and most of them don't let you pul your own parts. Wish I had a junk yard. I have not been to Canada since I was I kid. Maybe I should drive up.

I live in Canada too and yes there is a few inline Chev 6s available now and then, but the problem is here there avialable for only so long and if nobody buys them they get shipped to the crushers and disappear.
Untill I came to this site I thought I was the only one in the world who wanted 292s, I have bought all the 292s I could find around here for as cheap as I could get them.
As far as 250s and 230 go well 90% of those puppys get squished in a hurry around here especialy when steal price was up this past winter.
I am amazed that people on here actully want 250 engines its crazy.
Everyone around here wants v8s even rotten 305s its oposite of the way people think around here.
So if you see a nice old 292 or pre 1974 250 or 230 grab it cause were are you going to find them in 20 years.?

If you can find a farming area with a lot of irrigation, there are a lot of 292 irrigation engines in some areas. They can be picked up at farm auctions for nearly nothing. Joe

Don't forget you can also use the later 292 with the the integeral head, just loose the head, and put an earlier one on. I saw one here in the Pick n Pull last week.
