I am running a stock long block with offy intake and 390 carb, stovebolt header. WIDE ratio 4 speed and 2.41 gears. I have bad traction I need a posi, low gears and traction bars. I ran a 12.8 with bad traction. I bet I would knock a second off with traction, and more with a gear swap too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUiEzOkJlaY&feature=youtu.be

Hey 63, do you have any info on that bantam you were running? I`m running one a lot like it.It does look like you need gears and tires but you might start breaking parts if you can get it to hook up.

A fellow one-wheel wonder! With mine I'm running a 2.5" single exhaust through a flowmaster 10. Biggest difference is I have a powerglide. I haven't put it down a track and likely won't do so any time soon.

Gearing to get the car moving off the line is key to low a ET's IMHO a wide ratio 4 or 5 speed are a key piece to having a quick cars.

63 what are the gear ratios in your trans? Do you shift just once in the 1/8th? Tire size? I thought I had it bad with a 2.73 rear end. Jay 6155

Jay 6155 My gear ratios are 3.50,2.47,1.65 and 1.0 205/60 15 tire. I plan on dropping to 4.10 posi and going to a 215/65 15 tire with jegster liftbars. Right now I tried featheing throttle, did not work, the I tried shifing to second right off the line (the video) I got in to third and then bogged down Right now with traction I should just be getting into third at about 60-65mph. My goal speed is 75-80mph. I hope to make it with gears and traction. I am a bit worried about the strength of the Saginaw though. I may end up having going with a T10 a some point. I launched @ about 2500rpm.

Don't overlook your rear leaf spring suspension. Some things to consider would be:
stiffer bushings traction bars more leaves better shocks chassis preload softer tires

I am all over it. Right now I have air shocks in the and a "performance" street tire. I have mono leafs now, and stock bushings. I plan on going to multi leafs and poly bushings. I recently acquired a 65 Nova with a brand new 350 so that is going to be my driver and the 62 will be a pure race car.

And 90/10 80/20 70/30 Adjust able shocks in the front set at 90/10. So I don't feel the need to go to a Multi leaf. I have launched this car hard enough a few times with all four tires off the ground.

If it is going to be race only now how about a spool in the rear? That would force both tires to spin. Jay 6155

Thanks Larry. You say Air Shocks you get laughed at. I will keep the stock springs and upgrade the bushings. As far as a spool I have a 7.5" 10 bolt and they do not make spools for this axle. So I would need to replace axle. Plus I plan on some street driving, I need to find a cheep and easy way to go to 4.10's Yes I know those two do not go together.

I need to find a cheep and easy way to go to 4.10's Nine inch. Plentiful. Cheap as any. Ubiquitous. Probably available in the width and spring pads you need (Bronco?)

57 wagon housing is the correct width, but they suck up WAY too much horse power.

The 9" also has pretty high power loss for its gear size (more than its opposite, the 8-3/4" Chrysler diff) due to the very low pinion stem position.

I know the 8.25 mopar out of a Jeep Cherokee are the same width as my Nova, they also have 3.55 or 3.90. There is great aftermarket support for them too!

That is good to know. I have 8.2 10 bolt in the car now with a 308 gear. I just picked up a Ford 9 for nothing. Still think I will keep the CHEVYII rear end. Would like to build 7 to 8 second car in a 1/8 and still drive it on the weekend. Thank y'all for the information. Keep it coming.

Strange makes a GM 9in 3rd member BUT your ride needs to be under 3000Lbs. I asked because this is what I wanted to do for my 64. One day I may??? get it under that but right now I'm having fun with my all Steel Body.

ABW, That is close to what I want too, but I want little slower, 8.5 to 9 for me.
Larry, is that the 12 bolt gears in a 3rd member for a 9" housing?

I know that it's a little off topic, but does anyone know how the late GM 8.5 10 bolt rear end does in the power loss dept? Jay 6155

They are really pretty good. For a inline car I feel they are about perfect.

That would be it and now that I thought about it a little more I think it is 2800lbs for car weight. Which means I need to lose all the glass and some sheet metal parts. to get mine under the 2800. But once I get time & money to redo my stock front frame Some of that will already be gone. Tubing my front frame will drop a few hundred lbs. to start with. And if I go with Lexan for the glass their goes a few more lbs. So getting the weight down I don't feel will be that hard to do.

That is great. At some point I am going to gut the interior, and replace all the sheetmetal I can with fiberglass, add subframe connectors and go from there. Head cam and intake/exhaust (intake and exhause already done) are the only engine mods I plan on. I want a dead nuts reliable car that I can get in and race, plus drive a bit here and there on the road. ABW has a great goal, and I hope that he makes it.
