I have a dead 1964 292 and a (?) good 1977 292 , I want to place this engine in my 1969 C/10 with 350TH tranny as the current 250 burns oil like crazy .

The '64 292 and the 250 have the same size / thread bolts holding the flex plate to the crank , the '77 292 had larger bolts .

What now ? .

Also , is this 1977 292 American or Mexican made ? some of the accessory bolt holes are beat up like they've been tapped .

I'm sure there are exceptions to everything, but all 292 cranks I have ever seen all have the larger flywheel bolts. So first, I would confirm the engine with the smaller bolts that you think is a 292 really is one. If it is a 292 but has the smaller bolt size, you can just drill and tap them to the larger size with little effort as long as the flange is thick enough around its perimeter to allow it.

Also, to verify if the block is US or Mexican, just look on the side of the block. It is cast into the side "Hecho en Mexico" if it is. I have also seen a few blocks made in Canada as well, and they have a little different type of casting symbol in the side of those blocks.

I am new to this forum, but love my 250 Chevy's. Several years ago I bought a rebuildable 292. It has been torn down, but it is all there. Can anyone tell me what I should ask for a selling price? I am going to keep all my 6's the same, and stay with my 250's.

It's totally dependent on its condition. Most blocks that are high mileage have issues with the front cylinder cleaning up at a decent oversize making it less desirable. Also, the crank could have already been reground several times before also making it undesirable. So there are really a lot of variables that can make it worth more or less overall. So unless you can tear it down to verify the condition, its really just a pig in the poke.

A few years ago I acquired a completely rebuilt 292 - crank turned, block machined and painted, head done, all stock with a new cam - not assembled. It needed to be reassembled.

I advertised it here and asked $700. People were not tripping over each other trying to buy it fast. I let it go for $600.

Maybe that will help you set a price.

Looks like early engines were 7/16" flywheel bolts.
I have a 1964 292 that uses 7/16" bolts.

You can use the newer engine if you drill the older flexplate holes for 1/2" bolts. ( I believe 17/32" is what I used)
Of course you need to use proper starter to match flywheel / flexplate diameter.

I worded that poorly.
I meant the holes in the flywheel / flexplate, NOT THE CRANK.
Sorry for the confusion.

I'm not sure why I'm not getting notified there are replies , I clicked ' add to my watched topics ' .

I posted another query with the measurements on the '77 crank shaft & bore sizes yesterday , now I can't seem to find it ~ I'll go look again as I really need to begin ordering parts .

Thank you guys! I appreciate the replies, and I am sorry I have not responded. It did not notify me either.
The engine is in good shape. I have torn it down, and it has not ever been apart as far as I can see. But I think I have one of the newer 292 engines. It came out of a square hood 5 ton dump truck that was more of a farm type truck than commercial. Did not get to see the odometer in the truck though. They just guaranteed me it was rebuild-able...

To be notified of a reply you also have to go into your "My Stuff" folder and select that you want to be emailed of things added to the thread. Just selecting it to your "Watch List" doesn't do anything.
