Hi all, Came across these Borla headers for Chevy 194-292. see 3 pics at: http://s159.photobucket.com/user/BMXPETE/media/Borla/100_1361_zpsdjal3xsz.jpg.html?sort=6&o=0Anyone know anything about these? I'm thinking the design leans towards mid range power because of the shorter pipes. They were in a 70-ish Chevy pickup. Hopefully I can get them in my 61. Thanks

I thought everything Bora made was made of good stainless material, Not rusty 409 stainless?

MBHD: The magnet sticks to the header flanges but not the pipes. So, steel flanges and 409 for the pipes?

Those Borla headers would work better with "merge collectors".

Update #2:
Borla advises that these are 304 stainless. I may have to try shining up a spot. Might mean I end up polishing the whole set if it looks too good! : )

Hmmmm? the magnet does NOT(??) stick to the pipes.....That means it CANNOT be "rusty 409 stainless"--I thought all of Bola's stuff was made from the Architectural s.s. grades like the 300 series....oh, but they don't rust I hear.

Yep, a 316 stainless is better & better yet is 321 stainless http://www.rolledalloys.com/alloys/stainless-steels/321/en/Just remember though the higher the number on 300 series the better rust resistant but also @ a higher price. 409 stainless is for people who do not care about having rust, that is why OEM use 409 it's cheaper than the 300 series, there is a whole wealth of knowledge on the internet about stainless metals, titanium, etc,, try the internet to find out more. Try a google search for a change instead of rambling on here about 409 stainless being the best and does not rust as you say. A simple search will reveal 409 stainless rust easily. You will never see a high end custom car use 409 stainless for a show quality finish, unless it is a rat rod & you would need rust on the pipes IIRC, Borla has a lifetime warranty on there stainless mufflers, & guess what they are not using crappy 409 stainless, wonder why that is? IIRC, Nascar teams also uses 321 stainless, it it a much lighter stainless, ohh also, they do not tend to rust. They could use 409 stainless if they wanted to add weight to their vehicles & they don't mind rust. I would love to have my turbo exhaust manifold made out of 321 stainless, but it does cost much, much more than the 304 stainless I have. I don't have the Nascar sponcers backing for my ride. To the original poster, how did the 304 stainless clean up, any updated pics? MBHD

Where in my post did I "ramble" about "409 stainless being the best and does not rust...". I have reread my post several times--I cant find those words. You really seem to be quite intolerable to other folk's opinions. I'll pray tonight that you can find some Nascar "sponcers" to back your ride.

You could glass bead them, they should clean up pretty quickly. Check the mating surface to make sure they are flat. MBHD Borla says these are 304 stainless. Tubes are not magnetic, but flanges are. I think if you put 300 series stainless in the ocean I think they will all rust.
I recently looked into this and did some research. like 2 days ago. Had to do it for work. 304 will tarnish. It won't rust though. 316 is very resistant to corrosion. 410 is magnetic. It can rust but isn't likely to do so (I imagine headers would be an exception due to heat). 416: a bit more galling resistant over 410. Just a bit I ran into. Not trying to start or stop any arguments. Basically 400 series is magnetic. 300 series isn't. If it's not magnetic it's 300 series. If it is it's 400 series. Likely 304 or 410 stainless by the slight corrosion. I'd guess the tubes are 410 SST and the flanges are 304 SST. The 410 SST is more malleable meaning they're able to make tubes out of it. 304 was probably cheaper to buy in sheets.

I also think 409 is used in exhaust for a few other reasons. Cost weldability by MIG strength- it resists cracking Installed in Millions of cars/ trucks
That's all I know or care to know.
