I have generally reused my valve spring retainers for my 235 heads. I have a bare head to redo, no retainers. Does anyone know what other retainers might fit a 235?

You generally match them to the valve spring diameter for fitment.

Lol, I was not being very articulate there, lol. No, I was looking for some new retainers for a stock rebuild. Was looking for a cross reference to some other motor that used the same retainer as a 235.

No need to cross reference. Sealed Power still making them - rockauto has em:

Thats not the same part he's asking about, that is a valve lock. It fits into the retainer. The retainer is the flat round part that sits on top of the valve springs.

Any chance you have a part number and a manufacturer? I must be getting daft or something because I can't seem to find what I am looking for, at least on line, and the local chain stores are clueless, its not in their system.

The GM OEM part number is 3835392 which was used for both intake and exhaust from mid-47 to 54. It shows as the intake only part number through at least '57:

In '55 GM introduced some new retainers including a 'rotating' piece for the exhausts - which I have seen only in aftermarket form by Thompson, Wohlert among others - and predating the GM part.

The rotation apparently helps to prevent/discourage valve seat erosion which is caused by microscopic welding of the the valve to the seat under extreme heat. This problem was most apparent in heavy truck applications under load.

mdonohue, it removes drag from the engine by taking away the effort needed to spin a fan via a belt.

I am with you, lol. Just was not sure what an electric fan had to do with 235 Chevy valve spring retainers.
