Hello all! I had a knock in a 250 from a previous car. I pulled the engine and put it aside. I drug it out a couple of weeks ago so I could yet it apart for my turbo build. It's a 250 blue block? Anyway, there is some concerning bearing wear.., #1 main on the engine side is worn through to the copper (brass?) #5 rod on the rod not the cap is worn the same. As far as measurements go... Everything measures up with pretty tight tolerances. I think there was not more than .002" difference anywhere. This was a great running engine until this slight knock started. I'm wondering if I throw a set of bearing at it and jam it in the car? I certainly don't have money for anything more at this time. Best I can tell, this engine had never been apart. Meaning it ran for 80,000 without thus bearing noise. I ran it for over a year before it started.

How do the crank journals look? I would polish them with crocus cloth before installing new inserts. Good luck

Everything looks ok. Just the wear on those two bearings. I'm thinking new bearings. Hone and new rings. Slam it in. Hit it with 10 lbs. see where I'm at.

Why not have the crank turned and check the rod big ends for out of round? It would be great insurance!!
Also check the pistons VERY closely! A barrel shaped piston can give you that "Little knock".
After that you'll be able to install the engine with MUCH more confidence!!

The hopes and dreams were that I could put the bottom end bearings in and put it in the car. The more I look at it. The more work it needs.

Often reality makes dreams go away as quickly as they come to you unfortunately.

Tell me about it!I am going to call the machine shop tomorrow to get a price on redoing the short block. Sadly, I cannot afford the forged Pistons at this time! I will use the head as is and deal with it when money allows. The shop I use was owned by a very knowledgable guy... Especially when it comes to our beloved inlines! He runs a drag car called The Pepper Mill. Fingers crossed I can afford it!
