I am replacing my 250 engine with a 292 this weekend and I am having concerns about what to do with the dip stick. The 292 tube is very short and I don't have a dip stick. My 250 tube is long and bolts to the center of the side cover plates. Is the side cover center bolt hole in the same location on both the 250 and the 292? and if so are these interchangeable? The 250 is from a 1978 and the 292 is from a 1965. Thanks Perry

Front to rear on the engines those bolts are in the same spot BUT from the oil pan up to that bolt is almost an inch more on the 292. You can make a small tab to extend the tab on the 250 upper support so it can be secured with the center lifter cover bolt. Whichever pan you are using it would be good to fill the engine with the correct amount of oil, run it to fill the filter and all the usual oil passages, and then check the oil level on the converted dipstick to verify the Full mark against the actual full oil level. Remark it with a file score if needed.

Some 292 pans are shaped different from a 250 pan so that's why I suggest taking the time to see what the stick is really reading.

the 250's also have short tubes. The Long tubes were truck Or Van Motors.
