I've been working a couple jobs to make money this summer to get us through and then have some funds to work on the Camaro in the fall when the wife is working again. So I got another job this week monitoring a village well and walked into the well's generator room and saw this:

The village president said it was really old. I saw that it is a diesel inline but it's definitely not a Chevy. What manufacturer and what displacement it is? It's got the intake, distributor (which is the injector control on this), fuel pump, camshaft and covers on the driver side. Then the exhaust is on the passenger side.

Color makes me think Onan generator. See if you can find the ID plate and come up with a model number. We can go from there.

Onan doesn't use particular inlines? I'm not sure how many inline engine manufacturers there were? The top end of this is likely different castings since it is a diesel. But I suspect the bottom is also used for gasoline engines. I'll look for a tag next time I'm in there.

There are lots of old diesel generators out there. If you get some info from the set we can have some fun. There are other sites that cover this stuff better than here but now we need an answer here. smile
Many years ago we visited Scotty's Castle in Death Valley. The house tour was good but since we've been making our own power here since 1972 the tour of the Power House was way more interesting to me. There were a couple of gen sets with engines but the main one was water driven from a huge spring above the ranch. It was hard getting me out of there.

Well I found out from the Village President today that they have tried to find a grant to replace it because it is quite old. Someone left the door open to it on a winter night and the coolant water froze and cracked the water neck. They could not find a replacement part for it, but were able to epoxy it successfully. So identifying it and some source for used parts would be major bonus points with the boss for me. So I gotta find a tag on it when I'm in next I guess.

I've been sitting on this pics in my phone and been too busy to sit down and get them up, so I might as well get them up so people can give some input:

Jeeze....339cid. That sucker's pretty big. Looks like there are still several sources of parts. I'm not sure why the Village President said they couldn't get parts for it?

It looks like all the information you need is on those two tags. Hercules engines were used on many stationary applications welders, pumps, generators, and such. I have a four cylinder flathead Hercules that ran a welder. Some farm equipment used them. I also have a Kohler generator with a small overhead four that is rated a 1.5 KW at 115 Volts DC. It has no name on the engine that I can find.
It's not that the one you are dealing with has a military engine it is that the military used what Hercules was building. Check here on Smokestack
