Not sure, think America was more concerned with V-8 design and developement for it's muscle cars, where as Oz went smaller with the 265, and still had the fastest production car in Australia when it came out (and quickest 6 cylinder car in the world I read somewhere the year the E-49, top spec six-pack car came out..)
