The Mad Max police cars were Falcons (I have one of them here now too, ha ha) not Mopars.
You can legally import anything 25 years and older into the US, but I stick with pre-74 if it's for me, so as to not worry about California smog stuff, it would not be worth the effort in my eyes to go through the referee process for the sake of a year or 2 newer model car.
As for New Zealand, there are 265's there too (imported from Australia), but I can not really speak for thier market at all.
As for rebuild here or there, guess that would be your personally preference, you can just get all the parts and do the machine work here, or do it all there... just depends on the person.
